The Grips of FOMO, Part 2

Okay, calling it a ‘game’ is a bit of a stretch, but I’d gotten back into doing Duolingo lessons for French, and they do have a fair bit of ‘gamification’ via daily ‘quests’, monthly challenge goals, different leagues to rank up in, and a streak counter to keep track of how many days in a row you practice.

What do you gain from any of it? Well…not much, really. The main benefit of the streak is showing it off, as other people in the league can see roughly how long your streak is when they look at the rankings. They then also made it so that maintaining a long streak gives you some extra streak ‘protection’ tokens that let you skip a day and still maintain the streak, which in hindsight is really just a self-perpetuating benefit, keep the streak going so you can keep the streak going…

It’s surprisingly effective though, and it’s nice to have a daily reminder to get your exercises in to maintain the habit, so I kept a streak going for quite a while. Eventually though, as I had less free time, I didn’t want to do the full units, but as a creature of habit I still wanted to keep the streak. So, I started doing the bare minimum, just one quick practice lesson since it only takes a few minutes per day and is still enough to maintain the streak. But, that then became the new habit, and for a couple years now I’ve just been doing one simple practice lesson per day just to keep the streak going, even though it’s been the same lessons repeated over and over. And, y’know, I’ve intended to return to doing the full units, any day now, so I gotta keep that streak going for when that happens…

But, I’m now just going to let my streak expire. And stop with Duolingo entirely, really. Their pivot to “AI-first” just smacks too much of disrespect for their own workers, the work they do, and the quality of linguistics work, so I’m done with them. Maybe I’ll pick up some other service, but honestly, I’m probably not going to find the time.

So RIP my streak, killed by AI:

Somebody Needs To Buy A Vowel

I used to use Xfire to track my game playing time on the PC, but there have been some…shenanigans going on over there with its change in ownership, so I’ve dumped it for now. Instead I’m using a different program, Raptr, and there’s a card for it over in the sidebar.

The best part of Raptr is that it’ll track my usage of console games as well, and achievements on Xbox Live, Steam, and WoW, all in one place. Some consoles have to be updated manually, but it syncs and monitors what I play on the 360 automatically.

Odds and Ends

Some other miscellaneous little bits that I only spent a little time on and aren’t worth their own article:

My copy of Fable 2 should arrive on Monday. Amazon.ca actually managed to ship a preorder on time for once, so maybe they’re not completely hopeless after all. Hopefully they’ll keep it up when they ship Fallout 3 next week, too. Normally I wouldn’t bother with preorders, but I wanted to make sure I got the collector’s editions of these two.

The STCC (Swedish Touring Car Championship) game popped up on my Steam list unexpectedly. I’d forgotten that they were going to give it for free to people who’d preordered GTR Evolution because of some pricing mixup. The tracks in it look rather average, but it’s still nice to have some more, and there’s a few new car types too, including a Camaro cup. I just wish I had more time to practice, or I’ll never really get any good at these driving sims.

The PC version of Bully: Scholarship Edition suddenly arrived on Steam as well (its existence was only rumoured), and I figured I may as well give it a try. I never even got around to starting the PS2 version, and this edition adds a handful of new stuff. Setting up the controls is a bit awkward, though: you can’t use the keyboard/mouse and 360 controller simultaneously, switching between them is unintuitive, there’s no mouse control in menus, and there are some weird choices in the default controls like an insanely sluggish camera and using Left-Alt for the yes/confirm key. Otherwise though, the controls should work just like the 360 version, and it looks okay, aside from the occasional low-res texture and blocky model. It’ll have to wait until I’m finished the GTAs before I actually start it though.

I tried the Motorstorm: Pacific Rift demo, but it didn’t really impress me that much. It’s okay, but I’ve still got other games to play for that kind of fast, crazy racing action (Flatout, Burnout Paradise, potentially Midnight Club LA).

And oh dear, there are still plenty of promising games to come. I’m still tempted by Far Cry 2, Saints Row 2, Dead Space, X3: Terran Conflict, Guitar Hero: World Tour…

Damn You Amazon

Apparently preordering from Amazon means “Oh wait, you actually wanted to buy that? Well I guess it’s release day, give us a couple weeks to scrounge around for a copy…” Sigh, I wouldn’t even bother if it wasn’t the only reliable way to make sure I got hold of collector’s editions of things…
